In Allergen Free Air! Use Air Purifiers with Holmes Air Filter
Air being essential to human life as well as a source of human sense of
smell, it is only right that the air we breathe in be free of contaminants and
odors. Quite a number of us are allergic to dust, dust mites, pets and pollens
and prone to hay fever, asthma and sinusitis.
Breathing in air laden with dust, pet dander, dust mites allergens or
pollens will be very harmful for those who are susceptible to allergies. For
such people, doctors recommend the use of air filter. Holmes air filter from
Holmes is among the better air filters.
Usually the air purifier that doctors recommend for folks prone to
allergies is those which use true HEPA filters. True HEPA filters are
successful in removing 99.97 per cent of contaminants above 0.3 micron in size
from the air. Hyper HEPA filters are also there which purifies the air about
10 times more.
Holmes HEPA filters such as hapf30 are true HEPA filters. Hapf30 fits Holmes
air cleaner Models HAP240, HAP2400, HAP2404, HAP242, HAP243, HAP244, HAP246,
HAP260, HAP412, HAP422, HAP424, HAP440, HE300-IQ and Bionaire Models BAP1242,
BAP1412, BAP1422, BAP1552, BAP1825. BAP242, BAP260, BAP422, BAP815, BAP825.
Usually true HEPA air purifiers or cleaners such as Holmes Hap726 True HEPA
allergen remover or Holmes Hap 650 Harmony air purifier have, in addition to
the HEPA filter, a pre filter made of activated carbon which helps in removing
large particulates, dust, pet dander and odors.
This leaves only the fine dust and particulates for the HEPA filter. This
in turn prolongs the life of the HEPA filter.
Holmes HEPA carbon pre filters are enhanced with Arm & Hammer baking soda to
better remove odors.
Some of the Holmes True HEPA air purifiers use filter packs such as hapf30
which have both the carbon pre filter and the HEPA filter in the filter pack.
Others such as Harmony air purifier use modular true HEPA filter in which the
carbon pre filter and HEPA are separate.
In the former case, you will have to replace the filters together, which is a
disadvantage since the carbon pre filter and the true HEPA filter have
different life times. The carbon pre filter needs to be replaced every 3-4
months, while the HEPA filter need be replaced only every year.
If you wait for the HEPA filter to live its life out, the carbon pre filter
would have stopped working to its optimum long before that, which means, your
HEPA filter’s capability and life time is automatically reduced.
As for replacing the filter pack every 3-4 months, that would be like
throwing away the HEPA filter half used. They being expensive enough, it is
not a good option either.
Definitely, having separate carbon pre filter and HEPA filter is better.
If you are looking around for an air purifier and would like to know which one
to go for, then check out the reviews. Check out the reviews for air filters
as well as for the air purifier. Places such as consumer reports.org and
allergybuyersclub.com have reliable reviews and comparisons.
You could also check out reviews at sites such as Amazon, which give lay man
reviews, or reviews from people who have bought the item and used it.
These might even be more helpful since, all the little things that
professional reviewers may not think about, the consumers do. These reviewers
will also have experienced the air purifiers and air filters for a longer time
and hence will have many insights to give or points to make.
It would be best if you check out both sets of reviews and then decide on
which to go for.
