Air purifiers are essential, most people agree on that. If you are allergic
to dust, dust mite, pet dander or pollen, or if you are prone to asthmatic
attacks, then air purifiers are necessary for a trouble free life; if you do not
like odors or smoke (who does?), or if somebody in your family smokes, you need
air purifiers; air purifiers are essential.
The trouble is deciding which air purifier to buy; should you buy an Alen
a350 air purifier, a Honeywell 17000 QuietCare True HEPA air purifier, a
Rabbit Air BioGS Ultra Quiet air purifier, an Airfree Air Sterilizer, an
Austin HealthMate or any of the other numerous brands?
How do you decide which air purifier is the best at the price you can afford?
To a certain extend you could depend on air purifier ratings for that.
Deciding which air purifier is best is, at the best, a difficult task. There
are so many different brands of air purifiers which use so many different
types of air purification systems. Which one is best?
There are many factors to be taken into account while rating air purifiers.
First and foremost of course is the purification, the extend to which the air
purifier is successful in removing allergens and other contaminants from the
air.
Then there is the question whether during the purification any harmful by
product such as ozone is created. If you want to keep the air purifier running
constantly then it cannot possibly be very nice hearing the noise of that fan
constantly.
Hence the quietness of the air purifier is another factor to be considered
while doing air purifier rating. You also have to consider the energy
consumption, the expenditure, including the filter replacement charges etc.
As you can see, deciding whether an Alen a350, an Airfree air purifier, a
Honeywell HEPA air cleaner or an Austin HealthMate is best for you is not an
easy job.
Folks like Consumer Reports and Allergy Buyer’s Club give air purifier ratings
to help you decide which air purifier to buy.
Consumer Reports give comparison charts and ratings to subscribers and free
general information to everyone. They conduct tests on air purifiers and these
tests are conducted in sealed chambers. The measurements made are exact. There
are separate ratings for purification efficiency as well as noise level on
high and low speeds.
Allergy Buyer’s club conducts tests in unsealed office environments and factor
costs, noise etc into the ratings. They rate IQAir as the best, though Austin
Air and Airfree fare very well with a 4 star “very good” rating. Honeywell is
not listed at all.
Consumer Reports release air purifier ratings for each year. There has been an
air purifier rating for 2008 as well as air purifier rating for 2009 and 2010.
